Chapter Seven

Weitzman spluttered, almost like he was having a seizure. He told him what’d happened at LA International.

“Like I said, I need to find out where he is now. Does he have a villa on the coast, like some of the other major terrorists? Or is it possible he’s attending a conference somewhere in Beirut?”

“I still can’t believe you’re there.”

“Nonetheless, we’re sitting inside a Gulfstream private jet on the stand opposite a huge sign on the terminal that says ‘Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport.’ Are you able to give us the information?”

“Uh, I’m not sure. I can confirm he has a villa on the coast, believed to be somewhere between Beirut and Sidon. The area is heavily patrolled and well-guarded, and so far, Mossad has failed to get close enough to identify who owns which villa. Most would belong to wealthy businessmen from all over the Arab world, and just a few to high-ranking terrorists. This means we’re unable to give you the location of Khalid’s villa. As for the conference, we’ve heard nothing.”

“Can you find out?”

“Perhaps, perhaps not. I’ll do my best, but in the meantime, forget what I said earlier. You’ve done more than I would’ve believed possible. Followed Abu Khalid to Lebanon, it’s incredible! I’ll get onto it right away and call you as soon as I have anything.”

“Make it quick. We don’t know how much time we have.”

They spent the night in the silent aircraft. Duane munched his way through more food he’d found in the galley, and it seemed like he never stopped eating. There was nothing they could do, not until they had a location for the target. They could’ve sneaked out of the airport, but it would be difficult to hide in a hostile country where they’d have to assume every glance would be followed shortly after by the arrival of the cops. Anyway, it was comfortable inside the jet, although the climate made it very hot and humid with the air conditioning not running.

When dawn broke, he was seated in the pilot seat, watching the airport start to come back to life. Mostly men turning up for work, engineers in greasy overalls, and aircrew in smart navy-blue uniforms, along with a few women whose heads were shrouded in headscarves. A requirement for females in Islamic countries. It was time to wake Duane, who was stretched out on a fully reclined seat in the cabin. He got to his feet and stopped.

He’d seen a vehicle arrive, and unless he missed his guess, it was the limousine that took Khalid and his bodyguard from the airport. He’d give anything to know where it had gone, which would give him the location of the target. Then he saw movement, two men walking toward the Gulfstream, and he ran back into the cabin. Shook Duane awake. “We got company. We need to hide.”

He came to and got to his feet while Logan snatched up food wrappers and empty plastic bottles. They ran to the rear, opened the door, and went inside the hold.
